Jefferson nickel honors our nation's 3rd president. Designer Felix Schlag placed Thomas Jefferson's portrait on the obverse and his home on the reverse of the Jefferson nickel. All Jefferson nickels are struck in a nickel alloy, with the exception of the silver Wartime nickels of 1942-45. During the non-war years it was used extensively for coins. But during WW II it was no longer used for coins because the metal was crucial in the production of armor.
